For me there are 3 basic diets or ways of eating :
- To lose weight
- To maintain a healthy one
- To gain weight.
I will talk about each related to my experiences only.
TO LOSE WEIGHT. As for most losing weight is the hardest among the 3, and for perhaps less than 20% of the population their struggle is gaining.
I believe once you’ve experienced being overweight like I, and then working super hard to trim down, you are not going to want to waste your effort by gaining it all back again.
This is the truth of fad diets.
I define a fad diet as the newest and latest craze that you read and hear everyone talking about;
The one you want try for 3 weeks starving yourself thinking and hoping you will lose 10 pounds to fit back into those jeans or swimsuit.
Sometimes you actually do, only to gain it back again in less than a week. Hmmm… Why? Because it is not a sustainable diet for your body type and when you go back to eating the foods that you crave for (usually in larger amounts) your digestion goes from starvation mode to binge mode and cannot process all the extra calories properly.
So how does one lose weight safely & effectively?
It’s the soooo simple formula !
Weight loss = Eat less & exercise more.
Part one of the equation.
Cut down on the source of your excess & empty calories.
Here are some practical examples:
A. If you like butter, instead of three spoons on your toast or popcorn have just one. Same with sugar & soda consumption; cut them down to 1/3 of your usual intake. It is in this way you are not depriving your body of the foods that you like only limiting them. Isn’t it when you think that you cannot have your favorite cake, chips or lechon for the whole duration of a diet then you will certainly cheat or crave for that food and have too much of it before or after the so call diet? haha.
B. Instead of those fried foods with animal fat, try roasting, baking or air frying them to reduce the bad cholesterol. Also eat less of animal skin, it takes much longer time to digest & when not eliminated by the body through exercise it ends up clogging our arteries & organs.
C. Substitute some of that white rice with fiber like vegetables. And if you can’t, try black or brown rice instead, there’s also quinoa and hineleban.
D. As much as possible avoid processed foods And go back to the basics “whole foods”.
Second part of the equation is to exercise more. A lot of us are lazy to do it, and there are sometimes when I feel lazy too. However these are the moments when we need to motivate ourselves and condition our minds to set aside time for exercise.
Is of course the exact opposite of the former equation. And I’ve found is that I gained my most weight eating cheese, desserts and bread.
For those who purposely want to and need to gain weight, I recommend whey protein combined with multivitamins which enhance the appetite.
TO MAINTAIN WEIGHT.
Where I am now,
though I find I kind of float between maintenance and weight loss every now & then because I love ️ eating.
In fact as a writing I’m a few kilos over – and that when I start on cam work again will need to trim down a bit.
ATM Here is what I eat…
I don’t do breakfast lunch and dinner. I only eat when I am hungry and ask my body what it needs. Once you are in tune with your body it will tell you exactly what it needs. I learned this through hot yoga. In fact after a few sessions my body didn’t crave all the junk chips & sugary snacks it was used to and became eager for nutrition.
Other staple meals consist of yogurt w fruit. Salads with seeds. Roasted veggies with fish and chicken or gata. Pressed juices.
And on days when I feel like eating whatever I want – I’d have pizza, bread with butter, steak, desserts, occasionally pork but very seldom. And with these treats I’d take digestive enzymes to help my tummy break them down.
Finally the last part of the equation is my current fitness regimen. This is the reason I can eat usually whatever I like without feeling guilty.
I don’t have a schedule or routine but I try to exercise or sweat 3-4x a week with various activities like tennis, walking, bike, infrared sauna etc. depends where I am. But of all of them I like Hot Yoga the best.
The sweat helps flush toxin & great for the skin and activating the internal organs.
But this week since I’m on the beach my exercise will comprise mostly of be light swimming laps and some water cardio, tennis, run/walk with Blondie and stretching on plus some ab and arm strengthening with my honey bun (lol) who is also very into health and appearance. If you’re lucky to have a partner, then motivate each other!
Mine reminds me when I don’t need that extra bite of cake yeee!
In turn I try to prepare healthy meals for him.
But don’t worry if you are going it alone, you can always find a buddy at the gym or studio and even strangers who will give tips.
